It is with great sadness that the ETUC learnt of the passing of former President of the European Commission, Jacques Delors. The trade union movement loses one of its own.
A committed trade unionist himself, his presidency of the European Commission was marked by a deep commitment to social dialogue, social justice and solidarity – values as relevant and even more needed today.
His three terms at the helm of the European Commission will be remembered for his commitment to a strong role for trade unions, in policy making and with the ability to consensually set binding rules for the world of work through social dialogue.
The ETUC will continue to work to realise the goal of a "generous Europe with unions at its heart" that he called for in his 1995 address to the ETUC Congress.
We have lost the founding father of a social Europe - but his vision is needed now more than ever
