COP / UNFCCC negotiations

The UN Climate Change Conference (COP 21) in Paris in December 2015 delivered a Climate Change Agreement that will frame long-term global action. It represented a major political breakthrough, even though it was not as ambitious as trade unions and NGOs would have wished.

The ETUC and its affiliates are working to transform the Paris Agreement into long-term progress for the planet, for workers and their communities. The ETUC defends a just transition towards a low-carbon economy which will maintain and create quality employment, promote workers’ participation and social dialogue, provide training for workers, strengthen social protection systems, and respect workers’ rights.

The ETUC is running a two-year, EU-funded project to involve trade unions in the follow-up to the Paris Agreement and the decarbonisation process it should catalyse.

    The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recently issued a very worrying report on climate change, tracing fingerprints of manmade pollution across the changing climate. The reports clearly shows “that every fraction of warming makes the planet less safe – and that every bit of action contributes to a safer future.”

    ETUC calls on unions to join climate action ahead of UN summit to achieve just transition

    The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) will participate in the global climate action week to put pressure on world leaders to deliver urgent solutions to the worsening climate crisis, and is calling on national trade unions to take their own actions across Europe. Demonstrations will take place around the world between September 20 and 27 to coincide with the United Nation’s climate summit in New York, where heads of governments must take concrete action to deliver on the promises of the Paris Agreement.

    ETUC at Katowice Climate COP for a Just Transition

    The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) will be at the international climate ‘COP’ in Katowice next week and urge governments to manage the social and employment impacts of climate action through a socially fair ‘just transition’. The ETUC will welcome the ‘Solidarity and Just Transition Declaration’ presented by the Polish Government and supported by the European Union. The Declaration is expected on Monday 3 December, and ETUC will urge all Governments to back and act on it.

    European business, local authorities, civil society and trade unions want EU leaders to live up to their Paris commitments

    Today a major new coalition of businesses, cities, trade unions and NGOs, are calling on EU leaders to act on the Paris Agreement and ensure that EU climate policies are coherent with its goals. The new informal Coalition for Higher Ambition is an unprecedented gathering of stakeholders standing together to influence Heads of State and Ministers ahead of the 4 March Environment Council and the 17-18th March European Council – the largest and most diverse such grouping in Europe, on this topic.

    ETUC declaration on the Paris agreement on climate change

    The COP 21 has delivered a universal agreement which will frame the long term action on climate change. The ETUC welcomes that agreement which concludes a long and complex negotiation process. Giving to the world a global instrument to tackle climate change is a major political breakthrough even though, as stressed below, this agreement is in many respects not as ambitious as we would have wished.
