Latin America

The ETUC cooperates with the Trade Union Confederation of Americas (TUCA) and especially with trade unions in the countries where the EU has free trade agreements, notably through follow-up committees established by the EU institutions to monitor arrangements. This is the case in Colombia, Peru and Central American countries.  Cooperation is also being developed with unions in Mercosur as well as within the framework of institutional cooperation between the EU and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

    The fourth Trade Union Summit ends with a call to the EU-LAC Heads of State and Government for decent work with fair trade, political dialogue and a social pillar

    Brussels, 21/04/2008 A European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) delegation headed by Deputy General Secretary Maria Helena André, and composed of representatives from several national member confederations, took part in the Fourth EU-LAC Trade Union Summit. The trade union declaration calls for strong action to implement the association project between the two regions, launched at the Rio de Janeiro summit in 1999. It also stresses the need for reinforcement of integration projects on both continents.

    Vienna, 05/04/2006 To be checked against delivery Dear Colleagues I am very pleased to be here today for this important meeting of trade unions from Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean. I had the opportunity to attend your last meeting, in Mexico, two years ago, and I hope that your deliberations will identify progress in our relationship. This will give us an opportunity to draw up united positions for social justice for presentation to the summit of political leaders next month.

    European Trade Union Solidarity Conference with Cuba and Latin America

    London, 25/02/2006 To be checked against delivery I am glad of the opportunity to share with you today a few thoughts about European trade unions' relations with Latin America, the Caribbean and notably Cuba. The ETUC's links with trade union organisations in the region has intensified over time. The historic ties of our Spanish and Portuguese members in particular have been a great asset on which to build the relationship for the European trade union Movement as a whole.
