Multiannual Financial Framework

The ETUC criticised the Council’s failure to agree a Multiannual Financial Framework for 2014-2020 that would effectively tackle the impact of the economic crisis, especially mass unemployment, and support sustainable growth and investment.

The ETUC called for an increased budget to combat the effects of austerity measures, to support the EU 2020 strategy objectives and the initiatives set out in the Employment Package.

To match the ambitions set by the Europe 2020 strategy and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and to take up the many additional challenges, Europe must have the political will to increase the EU General Budget and reform the own resources system.

The current MFF has been stretched to its limits in the first two years. An ambitious revision of the MFF is essential for tackling the refugee and migration crises, stimulating stagnant economies, rebuilding Europe’s industrial base and tackling youth unemployment.

Cutting ambition: EU budget scaled down

National governments have reduced the top up of the EU budget until 2027 from an initial objective of €100 billion to €65 billion. The review of the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), adopted yesterday by the EU, determines EU funding up to the end of 2027. EU must increase its effort on social cohesion, not cut it

Commenting on the European Commission’s proposals for the Multiannual Financial Framework, European Trade Union Confederation Confederal Secretary Thiébaut Weber said: “We cannot accept the proposal to cut cohesion funding – and therefore probably the European Social Fund – by 7%.  This sends out an appalling signal to European citizens when the ink on the proclamation of the European Pillar of Social Rights (EPSR) is not yet dry.

An EU budget for working people?

The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) today called on EU leaders to support a budget for working people and not only increases in defence, security and external border control spending.      EU Heads of State & Government meet on Friday to discuss political priorities for the EU’s multiannual financial framework (MFF) after 2020.
