The role of care workers throughout the Covid-19 pandemic has been recognised in the Spanish province of Malaga, with an 18% pay increase. The rise will apply to home help staff who support people in municipalities with fewer than 20,000 inhabitants, bringing the hourly wage to €14.60 – the first change since 2007.
The president of the Provincial Council, Francisco Salado, said he wanted to recognise "the work of the auxiliaries in caring for the most vulnerable in the province, especially during the pandemic”. Currently, carers provide services to more than 4,500 vulnerable residents who need support in their own homes, with many older people, in particular, choosing not to move into a home or hospital for fear of the corona virus. Qualified and supervised personnel offer prevention, training and rehabilitation.
