The ETUC pushes for the continuous involvement of European and national social partners in the development of EU macroeconomic policy, through Tripartite Social Summits, European Commission Committees and the Macroeconomic Dialogue (MED), launched in 1999.
MED meetings take place twice a year, with a view to exchanging views and information between key macroeconomic policy stakeholders and decision makers on the one hand, and those responsible for wage formation (management and labour organisations) on the other. A strong social partner role in economic policy-making should not undermine the autonomous social dialogue and the right of the social partners to carry out bilateral negotiations and reach independent agreements.
