Social partners in Italy signed a joint ‘Call for Europe’ (Appello per l’Europa) in advance of the EU elections, calling for further integration and stronger social dialogue.
The three Italian trade union federations, CGIL, CISL and UIL, joined with the employers’ organisation Confindustria to reconfirm the country’s commitment to the EU and set out a vision for the future. It called on Europeans to cast their vote in favour of democracy, sustainable economic growth and social justice.
"Every once in a while, we forget that we have known so many years of lasting peace in our old continent. We owe all this to the choice of Europe, to the rejection of war. This is at the root of so many years of peace that we have experienced in our country and in the countries that make up our Europe," said CISL Secretary General Annamaria Furlan.
The document calls for greater social, economic and territorial cohesion, investment in infrastructure, a common approach to immigration and external policies maximising Europe’s influence in the world.
