Crisis is not an excuse to reduce health and safety protection - it's time for a new strategy, says ETUC

Brussels, 13/12/2011 "All workers have a right to working conditions respecting their health, safety and dignity regardless of the size of company they work for," reminded Bernadette Ségol, ETUC General Secretary, in opening the conference. "The ETUC will not accept a reversal of the burden of proof for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) on the need for risk assessment when we know that workers are often more at risk in smaller workplaces."

The "last chance summit" produces a split in the EU and more austerity

Brussels, 09/12/2011 A new Intergovernmental Agreement is hailed as a solution to the Eurozone problem. But “more fiscal discipline, more automatic sanctions and stricter surveillance” that compose this fiscal compact will further anger European citizens and workers. Deregulation is threatening workers' health and safety

Brussels, 02/12/2011 Although the ETUC recognises the important contribution made by SMEs to create jobs and growth, it opposes the proposal to exempt them from EU legislation. Europe needs new action now

Brussels, 23/11/2011 However, our economies, our jobs, our social systems and indeed our single currency itself continue to be pushed to the brink of collapse by irrational financial market speculation. The situation is urgent and we cannot afford to wait for the outcome of a Green paper. The ETUC therefore calls upon the European Central Bank (ECB) to act right now and do what any other well-respected central bank around the world would do: Stop the madness of financial speculation and contagion by confronting the markets with a wall of finance and liquidity.

The ETUC General Secretary had at the time sent a letter to the presidents of the European Commission and the Council of the European Union to ask that one of the few programmes that symbolises European solidarity be maintained.
