Company restructuring is no longer an exceptional circumstance. It has become a daily reality faced by trade unions and workers and a regular feature across all sectors and activities. It can also be very difficult to navigate.
The Transnational Restructuring Navigator (TRN) is a new online, interactive tool that helps worker representatives do exactly that. It provides them with the recommended trade union approach to confronting 11 different types of transnational restructuring. Multiple entrance points on the site take the user directly to the information they are looking for, whether that concerns the type of restructuring, the level of worker representation, or a particular phase of the restructuring. Through an interactive approach, the TRN offers worker representatives practical recommendations, legal references and clear indications about their rights (as well as managements’ obligations) when facing restructuring in multinational companies.
The jobs of millions of workers will keep evolving under the effects of digitalisation, adaptation to climate change, ever-growing and ill-regulated globalisation, and ageing societies. One of the core missions of the European or SE Works Councils is to be informed and consulted on company restructuring, to shape that change, and to counteract strategies aimed at pitting workers, sites, and countries against one another. The TRN has been developed with the aim of helping worker representatives at European and national level to navigate through this challenging task.
A joint project of the European Trade Union Federations (ETUFs) industriAll Europe, UNI Europa, EFBWW, EFFAT, ETF and EPSU – in cooperation with the ETUI and the ETUC – the TRN is the latest invaluable addition to the toolbox of support provided by the ETUFs to strengthen European-level worker representation. The tool will be continuously updated with the most recent information.
